Why a FREE website is never really a FREE website!

Why a FREE website is never really a FREE website!

The “FREE WEBSITE” Problem in Web Design

Usually the “free website” itself is the least expensive part of the deal. The company expects to make its money somewhere else.

  • Monthly hosting or maintenance fees. The build may be free, but you could pay $50–$300+ every month afterward.
  • Long-term contracts. Some require 12, 24, or even 36 months of service to qualify for the “free” site.
  • You may not own the website. If you cancel, the company may shut the site down rather than give you the files.
  • You may not own the domain. This is one of the biggest things to check. The business should ideally own and control its own domain name.
  • Very limited design. “Free” may mean choosing from a handful of templates with minimal customization.
  • Limited pages. The offer might include only a homepage or a 3–5 page site, with additional pages charged separately.
  • SEO costs extra. They may build the site but charge separately for search optimization, Google Business work, schema, content optimization, etc.
  • Content isn’t included. Writing, photography, graphics, logo work, and uploading products or services may all be additional charges.
  • E-commerce costs extra. WooCommerce, payment gateways, shipping setup, memberships, booking systems, forms, and integrations are often outside the free package.
  • Required advertising/marketing package. Sometimes the website is free only if you purchase SEO, social media management, lead generation, advertising, or another recurring service.
  • Their branding stays on the site. You might get “Website powered by…” links or advertising unless you upgrade.
  • Expensive changes later. The original build is free, but every modification, new page, or support request has a fee.
  • Transfer fees. If you decide to leave, they may charge hundreds or thousands of dollars to migrate the website.
  • Proprietary platform. Some companies build the site using their own system, meaning you can’t easily move it to WordPress, Shopify, or another provider.
  • Lead ownership. In some models, inquiries generated through the site technically go through their platform, and you may effectively be renting access to your own leads.
When FREE is not FREE!

Conclusion and Final Thoughts from The Little Web Design Shop about WHO and HOW you should trust to a business that offers any type of free service!

  1. There are legitimate companies offering free websites, though. For example, a designer might offer a simple free website because they’re building their portfolio, trying to establish a relationship, or expecting to earn money through hosting and future services. The issue isn’t necessarily that the website is free—it’s whether the ongoing obligations are clearly disclosed.
  2. Before accepting one, I would specifically ask:
  3. “Who owns the website, domain, content, and files if I cancel?”
  4. Then ask what the total cost is over 12, 24, and 36 months.
  5. That often makes the real price of the “free website” immediately obvious.
  6. For example, a company offering a $0 website + $199/month for 36 months is really selling a $7,164 website/service package, not a free website.

Ownership equals freedom.

When you control your domain, hosting, data, and access, you can make decisions based on what’s best for your business, not what you’re forced into.

If you’re currently in a situation where your website feels out of control, it may be worth reviewing your access, contracts, and website setup sooner rather than later. A little due diligence today can save a major headache tomorrow.
